Leading and lagging sectors in this Rally

April 19, 2009 by: Chris

Since we have gotten to the point where the rally is beyond question … let’s take a look at what sectors have been outperforming others.  Here is the quick take:

XLB – Materials – leader – strong, at resistance

XLE – Energy – laggard – on balance volume shows stealthy strength

XLF – Financials – leader – at resistance – precarious

XLI – Industrials – leader – very strong performer

XLK – Technology – former leader now acting in-line – could be rolling over?

XLP – Consumer Staples – laggard – if market sells off, this may become a leader again however

XLU – Utilities – laggard – many reasons not to like this group

XLV – Healthcare – laggard – good deal of price resistance overhead

XLY – Consumer Discretionary – leader – price action ahead of obv – potential issue

I’ve added a new feature to Studentofmarkets which I think will help when I go thru an exercise like this.  I’ve added comments to the charts for nine different sector ETF’s.  You can click on the chart to get a view of the larger chart.
