Asset Allocation Experiment – Stock Funds part deux

November 25, 2009 by: Chris

Last week I utilized the perfchart function of Stockcharts.com to examine the different performance of stock mutual funds.  I examined the Growth and Value funds.  This week I will look into Large and Small Cap funds along with two sector funds – biotechnology and utilities.

The basis for looking at each of these different types of funds is because, well, they are there.  I would not want to leave a stone unturned when looking for the best results.  I may not them in every asset allocation that I put together, but I want to know and understand the funds that are out there and what to expect in performance from each.

The following were the funds that I compared today

  • FLVAX – Franklin Large Cap Value
  • FRMCX – Franklin Microcap Value
  • FRVLX – Franklin Small Cap Value
  • FRSGX – Franklin Small-Mid Cap Growth
  • SBVAX – Legg Mason Partners Small Cap Value Fund
  • VSCAX – Van Kampen Small Cap Value
  • FBIDX – Franklin Biotechnology Discovery Fund
  • FKUTX – Franklin Utilities Fund

I looked at 1, 2 and 5 year performance to determine which funds were best for each time period.

1 Year – Franklin Small Cap Growth and Franklin Microcap are the standouts for this time period

2 Year – Franklin Biotech and Small Cap Value performed the best in this difficult time period

5 Year – Franklin Microcap and Small Cap Value stood above the others here.

It would appear the the biotech fund might make sense in a more defensive portfolio.  In times of high growth, however, it might make sense to include the Franklin Microcap Fund.  I believe I will include this fund in my asset allocation mix.

Next week … the last of the stock funds … the International Funds
